After going through several organizations, I have narrowed down the choices to three organizations that I feel are worthwhile causes. Not only do I feel that they’re worthwhile, but I feel that no matter the amount we eventually raise, we will be able to make a good contribution with an impact. In no particular order, the finalists are (each header has a link to the organization’s website):
The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education (Las Vegas, Nevada)
The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education is dedicated to transforming U.S. public education for underserved youth. The Foundation drives reform by engaging in practice, policy and partnerships that provide quality education and enrichment opportunities… We put these beliefs into practice at Agassi Prep by closing the gap between the low level of funding the state of Nevada provides and the appropriate level of funding that is required to deliver a quality education. By applying passion and discipline to our work we create an environment in which children can excel.
Free Arts of Arizona (Phoenix, Arizona)
Free Arts of Arizona is a nonprofit organization that brings the healing powers of the creative arts to abused, neglected and homeless children by partnering with over 100 group homes, treatment centers and shelters in Maricopa County… Many of the children we serve have been removed from their families due to abuse or neglect, and have been placed by the state into a group home. Still other children live with one parent in a domestic violence shelter or both parents in a homeless shelter. Some children live in residential treatment centers where they work to conquer painful issues of physical and sexual abuse, substance abuse, and violence. The creative arts give children a way to identify their emotions and express them through a positive medium. The creative arts give children the tools they need to improve self-esteem and social skills. The creative arts give children a voice.
Nuçi’s Space (Nuçi Phillips Memorial Foundation) (Athens, Georgia)
The mission of Nuçi’s Space is to prevent suicide by providing obstacle-free treatment for musicians suffering from depression and other such disorders, as well as to assist in the emotional, physical and professional well being of musicians. To accomplish this mission, Nuçi’s Space actively participates in treatment, educates to destigmatize mental illness and advocates for sufferers.
You will see off to the side a box where you can cast your vote. I urge you to vote soon (limited to one) and to please continue to spread the word. The voting will end next Friday, November 6th at exactly 12:01 p.m. I’ll immediately post the winner afterward.
These three organizations represent causes I care about, but also have geographical significance as well. I was born and raised in Arizona, my wife was raised in Nevada (near Las Vegas), and we currently live in Athens, GA. It was nice how the final three came out.
Okay…go! Vote! Now!

All worthy organizations…It’s hard to pick, but in the end, we’ll be helping a good cause no matter what.
But I could never support anything with Andre Agassi’s name attached after that tell all book that has been all over the news with his crystal meth use and other confessions! Also, why is the suicide one only for musicians? I would like it better if it was for anyone.
How could I NOT vote for something with Agassi in the name?! Something that is happening in my very own town?! Something that I think is very, very awesome?!
So… guess what I voted for
Its so hard to pick one. I like what the Agassi foundation does but I don’t like Agassi himself. The free arts foundation is nice. And so I vote for either of those two. I feel like with either of these foundations you would be helping more kids in general rather than only musicians with the last foundation.
I have to admit that I am a bit out of the loop with all that has come to light regarding Andre Agassi, though it sounds as if it’s all in the past. The persons most hurt by the meth use are obviously Agassi himself and those closest to him. But, people can change. I think his foundation has an ambitious agenda and does a lot of good things. Perhaps next time around I’ll pick five charities or orgs to vote for to give some more variety.
I read the Agassi one as un deserved youth at first and wondered about it for a second!
Jolynn – I looked at the group’s website – seems like the foundation is in someone’s name, who was a musician. Also, a way to handle things financially maybe?
First off let me say I’m not affiliated with Nuci’s Space I’ve just been to it for various benefits/shows.
Nuci’s Space was founded after the death of an Athens, GA musician. They provide regular doctors as well as counseling for those who cannot afford insurance as most jobs musicians hold don’t provide benefits. It also serves as a social network so noone falls along the wayside.
Nuci’s Space is really a great foundation that could do great things with enough funding. Drive-By Truckers holds a three night benefit concert for them every year.
Yes these are all great organizations so it’s hard to choose! But I did finally vote. Great idea, John!
