Being Accountable

Being Accountable

When John asked me to be a contributor for Fitlanthropist, he probably didn’t imagine I’d be ratting him out. But accountability is a good thing, right? So here I am, admitting to you that we ate donuts last night.

And I mean donuts as in more than one donut per person. At the time, it seemed like a decent idea. We were both in the mood for a treat, so John went and found us one. I don’t think a treat once in a while is going to wreck our goals.

The problem isn’t that we ate a treat, it’s that we ate too much of it. That much sugar in the body at one time just isn’t a good thing. A blood sugar spike can cause you to feel weak and tired. Not to mention that I just felt angry at myself for giving in to my cravings. I worked out yesterday morning and then neutralized the benefits by overeating.

I guess the thing to take away from this experience is that right after making the mistake of eating too many donuts, we picked ourselves back up and got back on the wagon. We got up early this morning and worked out. We are back to trying to eat healthy foods.

Living a healthy lifestyle is not easy. We have setbacks all the time. But the main thing is to keep doing small things that move us toward our goals. It isn’t the one messup or the one workout that will make or break things. It’s the things we do every day that matter.

I’ve found the problem with refined sugar is, that once you have some, you want more. It takes about three weeks of not eating any processed sugar before you don’t want it any more.
This year at our house the treat of choice has been a lemon, frozen strawberries and Stevia blended together in the Vita Mix. YUM-O! Sweet enough to crush the sugar cravings, but without the crash. It counts as all our fruit for the day, though. So it really is a treat!
Good luck on your quest for healthful lifestyle. It really is a journey.

I did that same thing this week with cinnamon rolls! I felt gross and mad afterward, but I knew that it was just a bump in the road and that I would be extra back on track the next day. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who does this and that I can learn from mistakes like it.

I know you’ve been at this for a while, I just started 3 months ago (and decided to blog about it as well). I really appreciate seeing the struggles others are going through, puts it into perspective when I’m fighting my way through!

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  4. Well I won’t agree that eating donuts is a good thing. Although I’ve had my share of a dozen or so from time to time. But what I think is important and I want to commend you on is what you did the next day. You got right back on track. As I right this I had an incredible amount of pastries yesterday for the easter celebration and today I’m heading to the track for a good cardio workout with my partner. We are not perfect and sometimes we may eat things that are not good for us but as long as we don’t kid ourselves and we continue moving forward I believe we will accomplish our health and fitness goals.
