i like hillari's comment on fat guy in a little coat haha. i understand the motivation prob in the morning. i hate running in the morning, i have to wait a couple hours after i wake up to finally feel like running. but sometimes i just make myself do it. especially if i do wake up, i might as well go run. but i do like running in the middle of the day (if its not too hot) or in the evening best. which means i havent done much running (and some other reasons too). you can always try running indoors if there is an indoor track on campus. but then you would have to go to campus. anyways good luck. get motivated and start doing it again. if you need some motivation i can come give you a good kick in the pants :)

John - As you know I've been on the weight loss journey myself - losing a ton of weight in the beginning and now losing .4 by .2 a week =)

However, I HATE the title of this blog. You are NOT failing - the fact that you are conscious of it, and wanting to do something about it means that you are NOT failing.

I think of weight loss in very small increments - like hour by hour. I have found that the thing about weight loss that is SO hard is that it is 3,000 decisions every day to make the 'right' choices. It's literally waking up and eating a 'good' breakfast. Then drinking your water. . .then when snack or lunch time comes up making the 'right' decisions. Then ignoring whatever free food, fast food or cookies are placed in front of you at any gathering, function, office, etc.

I hope you will continue on your journey and know that the weight didn't come on fast and it won't come off fast. You have to work at it EVERY day, every hour. I try to take each meal at a time and make being conscious of what goes in my mouth and exercising a priority.

Now here's the tough love, yes - it's hot, everyone's hot. . .BUT you don't have to run to really burn calories, you can walk and/or do a video at your home (although that may be difficult with Rhystopher) =). . .When I started losing weight a few years back I did Tae-Bo videos (what I could of them) in my apt. 2 days a week until I felt strong enough to go to the gym, etc. . .What about using the university gym to walk on the treadmill at an incline or do the elliptical? I personally believe (and a lot of people will likely disagree) that it ALL starts with exercise. I find that when I exercise I feel AWFUL if I eat a bunch of crap. It's not the other way around though - if you eat healthy or 'good' for a day, you don't necessarily feel inclined to exercise.

So that's my advice. Make exercise a priority. Don't EVER say you're failing. Stay positive and take it hour by hour. Sadly - NOTHING in the South makes it easy to eat well but trust me, if I can do it you most DEFINITELY CAN. =)

Sending you positive thoughts and good energy.

PS - I'll be running tomorrow morning (before the hot comes out) and I'll be sending happy thoughts that you'll do the same

Well I won't agree that eating donuts is a good thing. Although I've had my share of a dozen or so from time to time. But what I think is important and I want to commend you on is what you did the next day. You got right back on track. As I right this I had an incredible amount of pastries yesterday for the easter celebration and today I'm heading to the track for a good cardio workout with my partner. We are not perfect and sometimes we may eat things that are not good for us but as long as we don't kid ourselves and we continue moving forward I believe we will accomplish our health and fitness goals.

Hurray! I was just about to get on your case ;)
You're so brave to eliminate sugar. Good luck! Cutting soda out of my diet is easy. Sugar however? Yikes. I should. But I won't.

$200 is awesome. I'm sure FAofA was grateful.
For the next round I vote for the Agassi Foundation again.
You rock Johnny!

I know you've been at this for a while, I just started 3 months ago (and decided to blog about it as well). I really appreciate seeing the struggles others are going through, puts it into perspective when I'm fighting my way through!

Thanks for the inspiration.

I did that same thing this week with cinnamon rolls! I felt gross and mad afterward, but I knew that it was just a bump in the road and that I would be extra back on track the next day. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who does this and that I can learn from mistakes like it.

Lately my motivation has been getting my body back in shape post-pregnancy. Up until a month ago I didn't really care about getting rid of my flab, but right now I am so motivated. Any time I am tempted to skip a workout I just think about how much I really want to look good again. I think another thing that motivates me is the results that I am noticing - I have lost weight and can lift heavy things, which makes me want to exercise more.

I've found the problem with refined sugar is, that once you have some, you want more. It takes about three weeks of not eating any processed sugar before you don't want it any more.
This year at our house the treat of choice has been a lemon, frozen strawberries and Stevia blended together in the Vita Mix. YUM-O! Sweet enough to crush the sugar cravings, but without the crash. It counts as all our fruit for the day, though. So it really is a treat!
Good luck on your quest for healthful lifestyle. It really is a journey.

Christy - good post. My motivation right now is that my neighbor and I are trading childcare so that we can work out every day. I miss out on a chance to be alone (without a crazy toddler jumping all over me) and exercise if I don't do it. So now I get up in the morning and do Jillian Michaels, even though I don't really want to. :)

Christy, you're so inspiring. My motivation to anything akin to exercise is the desire to avoid becoming a total wimp. I need muscles! The ability to hold a jug of milk across the table to pass to my kids... sad, but true. I want to be able to run and sprint with my kids and impress them by carrying all their bags and mine up the stairs to our apartment without becoming winded. Other times, my motivation is fear - fear of my good genes coming back to bite me when I'm old and everything that I ate without a whim when younger suddenly solidifying into one great mass right in my behind.
Lastly, sexy shoulders. Some women really have 'em. And I want them!
